The pub was originally owned C1860 by Edward Habin, a wealthy Cicestrian, who was a harness maker and horse dealer. It was said that one of his patrons Sir Hyde Bath K.C.B. (of Woodend - Stoke) offered to pay for the inn sign if it was called 'Four Chesnut Horses'
The Skittle Alley contains a well that was discovered and rebuilt while renovations were being undertaken in the room.
The well is fed by the river Lavent but it is unclear just how old it is.

Beware of the curse of the well goblin should you drop anything other than valuable coins into its depths!!!
